Chris gave a good detailed explanation in his post.

My experience: Years ago, we had two systems which used RDB/RFA
and we benchmarked all image access across the network to another
system at exactly 50% thru-put of local db access.

Since disk was very expensive we lived with it. Now, I would probably
replicate the db's on each system.

Of course YMMV.
