I don't know about slowing things down. I do know that there are a lot of
very clever character mode applications out there that do things that a GUI
couldn't (or shouldn't) come close to.

The bottom line is that most IT decision makers *expect* a GUI, rightly or
wrongly. Also, many users these days have only known GUI, see the college
freshman thread of the last week or so.
