neccesity of ONVS= commands:

One way around the problem -- and I'm not being flippant here -- is to keep
all of the third-party software on the system volume set -- and move all of
your data and your programs to alternate volume sets of your choosing.

Doing this will allow all of your third-party update jobs (both "intelligent"
and not) to run without impediment. And you are allowed the capability to
write your own jobs to manage your data however you wish.

Sometimes it's just easier to accomodate the darkness than try to go light a
candle under everyone else :-).
