Ah, that explains it -- I used to do this on a Series 58 with MPE/V.  (Although
we had a small MPE/iX box, it was used mostly as a communications link to other
systems and I can't remember ever having to reboot it in the two or three years
I worked with it.)

Several folks have corrected me offline. This functionality died
with the 3000 classics. The MPE/iX systems did not allow cntl-A
console commands from a logical console. The MPE/V systems did.
