Since no one else has mentioned it, here is my two cents...

When I was the system manager for a very busy 987 we had performance
problems. Using SOS/3000 we discovered that our "queue length" was too
long. According to the worthy gentlemen at Lund Performance solutions we
had too many IO's trying to use Ldev 1.

Adding another disc to the MPE_SYSTEM_VOLUME_SET allowed some of the load
associated with the operating system (spool files, transient space and the
like) to be given to the new spindle. Our performance problems disappeared.

A 2Gb drive would cost about $500 used and could be installed yourself (T10
torx screwdriver required.) <grin>
