That's a bit embarrassing.  I looked at the "Plug & Play Posix" paper
(thanks for the link),
it was last updated in 2000 and the procedure to restore HFS files
(provided by Donna to solve my problem) was listed here
near the beginning and the person who originally provided that info
was.....myself.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste... :(
