All,
Jim's note reminded me that the HP3000 enjoyed heavy penetration in
schools and colleges. In many schools, it was also used to teach
computer science and programming.
As long as we are doing a show of hands, would anyone care to "raise a
hand" describing any college or university that uses the HP3000 for
teaching. I would love to see some hands. Unfortunately, I'm afraid
that there are few, if any left and the available pool of
MPEiX/TurboImage talent will shrink. And lack of available trained
HP3000 people is certainly a factor in some people's HP3000 hardware
planning decisions. But like other HP3000 trends the past few years,
this is another one that could also be reversed.

Currently 31 of the 71 California Community College Districts use HP3000
as their primary system (the number was 34 a couple of years ago, but 3
switched to HP9000). Sadly, I know of at least four of these colleges
that are seriously considering moving off the HP3000 platform. Even
sader still, they are planning to switch to Sun!
