You've discovered POSIX's most useless error message. (It's the
equivalent of MPE's "Program terminated in an error state", without
the benefit that MPE usually gives you _some_ clue as to why).
The best strategy in general for dealing with this condition is
to re-run the same thing from the MPE CI, where you're likely
to get a useful error message.
Since you're getting this on Java, I can tell you the most common
reason we've seen this problem on Java is due to incorrect permissions
on some of the files. Check the *.sl library files in /usr and
/usr/lib, and make sure they have read permission for anyone. Also
check the files under /usr/local/java and make sure they have
read and execute permission for anyone. (Another quick way you
can check if it's permissions related is to log on as MANAGER.SYS,
and see if you can run things. If so, it probably is permissions.
