Ahhh, but what you snipped [along with the attribution] was the note

Your example shows you are setting EXITONERROR after you've made the connection [though it is interesting that the program shows "exitonerror mode is on" in response to the command]  You might try setting it prior to the OPEN command and see if that makes a difference [and file an S/R as this seems a bit odd, if nothing else, the documentation should emphasize the need for it to be set "first"]
