There do appear to be some problems with Samba running on
MPE/iX 5.0 *before* pp6. Joe Geiser previously sent some information
to the list about some workarounds. You may wish to check the
archives on that.

With that said, on my 5.5 pp1 system, you can use either DNS or
HOSTS files for name resolution without problems. One thing
that I did run into while testing though, was if I had the 3000 setup
to resolve names using a DNS, and that DNS server was not accessible
for some reason, then the WIN95 PC client would timeout before
Samba would timeout waiting for the name lookup to fail. This caused
the Samba server to not show up (consistently) in the Network Neighborhood,
and seeing the ever popular "writing 4 bytes to client" error in the
log.smb file.

The main thing to keep in mind, is that both the client and the host need to
be able to resolve the name/ip for both itself, and each other. If they can
get that information from either a DNS or the hosts (hosts and lmhosts
on the WIN95 side if not using a WINS server), then things should work
fine. As to the 'routed network', you can place an entry into the clients
lmhosts file, and Samba should be visible to it (I've done this successfully
to other HP3000's across the internet :). If you have a WINS server
available on the segment where the PC's are located, you can use the
'remote announce' parameter to notify that WINS server of Samba's
availability on the other segement too. This way you don't have to
maintain the lmhosts file at all.

Good Luck and happy Sambaing!

Subject: [HP3000-L] SAMBA question

A while back there was a post which implied that Windows 95 clients would
not be able to "see" SAMBA/iX if the Windows 95 client uses a hosts file.

Is this in fact the case? What about if the SAMBAi/iX server system is
placed in the lmhosts file?

Also, a question came up as to whether the Windows 95 client would be
able to see the SAMBA/iX server if they were on different segments of a
routered network. Anyone know the answer?

Thanks,

John
