Art, we faced this exact problem a few years back. We had a smaller
number of offices, but several(many) printers at each site. What I
decided
(I can't say we since I did it) was to assign a range of ldev #s to each
site. I also allocated 10 ldevs to each printer. Here's an example:
Site A has ldevs 1000-1999
Site B has ldevs 2000-2199
Site C has ldevs 2500-2999
etc.
ldev 1100 - "greenbar"
1101 - landscape 1 up plain
1102 - landscape 2 up plain
1103 - portrait mode
1104 - landscape 4 up plain
1105 - landscape plain duplex
1106 - portrait duplex
1107 - landscape compressed plain (170 characters)
1108 - reserved for Fantasia forms use
1109 - reserved for Fantasia forms use
(the reason for 2 Fantasia forms is the way MANMAN handles a couple of
forms)
The biggest problem with this approach is that it quickly consumes LDEV
nubmers,
and there is a limited number of them (the exact # escapes me right now
but it is
about 4400).
The second problem is that a single "typo" and your report gets printed
on the
other side of the country (or world in my case).
The biggest advantage to this numbering scheme is, it's easy to remember
(or figure
out) what printer to use.
Not a perfect solution but a workable one
