One "tricky" thing about the 28.8 and 14.4 U.S. Robotics modems that
isn't well documented is the way you set the speed of the serial port.
(You must set the speed of the serial port to a speed that will be
compatible with the serial port on the HP3000.  If the HP3000 port is
configured to speed sense, you must make sure the modem's serial port
speed is set to a rate within the range the HP3000 can handle, say
1200 - 19,200.)
 
The secret is to connect a terminal to the serial port of the modem
using the same baud rate for which you will later want to connect to
the HP3000 with.  With the terminal connected to the modem save the
configuration to the modem's non-volatile memory (AT&W0).  This should
do it.
 
(Also, I would recommend that you then turn off "smart" modem features
with the switch settings.  This will prevent problems particularly
when you disconnect, that might prevent you from reconnecting.)
