I just finished installing our fourth linux server (RH-7.3, one of the
four is a crash and burn development box, one is a hot spare, and
two are production servers) and have completed decommissioning
two of our three HP9000s in consequence. One piece of software
that I have found most useful (well actually there is a lot of linux
software I have found most useful but this piece stands out) is
webmin. This is a web based linux sytem-administrator's tool
available (free) at www.webmin.com.

Another piece of software that you really need if you are
contemplating using linux as a production server is lvm (logical
volume management - allows you to extend file systems without
having to re-partition/re-format your hdd) from sistina.com. This is
also free. Version 1.03 of lvm ships with RH-7.3 but the system is
not set up to make use of it out of the box. However, it is definitely
worth the effort to install and employ. Still another jewel is pureftpd
(pureftpd.org), which provides high server security with an ease of
administration that one can only appreciate after having to build and
configure wu-ftpd through its last seven years of permutations. This
doesn't ship with RH (yet) but it should. However, a RH compatible
RPM is available.

One thing I will miss as we move off of HP is the quality of the
hardware. I have an 842 that has been running our imapd since
1995 and as of this morning has been up 587 days. One of my new
linux boxes has already blown a 40GB HDD less than 15 days after
commissioning. Of course the 842 was $25,000 net in 1995 and the
linux boxes were each less than $500 after taxes so I suppose that
tells the tale right there.

What are you going to use as your development platform on linux?

Regards,
Jim
