Mark - thanks for posting that ad. I believe Mr. Packard has eloquently
and
succinctly stated why this merger should not take place, and for what
it is
worth will cast my measly few hundred shares against the merger...

Subject: WSJ: David W. Packard's Response

Sorry for not getting this out on Wednesday, but here's the response to
the
prior WSJ ad. This one is the same size and located in the same place
as
the Carly ad.

(Large text)
There You Go Again!

(Smaller-bold)
Ms. Fiorina, your recent advertisement
misappropriates Dave Packard's words
"to remain static is to lose ground."

(Same size - no bold)
As a professional marketer you know how to enhance
your message by invoking the image of an admired person.
But my father's quote has no relevance to your argument.

You expect readers of The Wall Street Journal to believe that
your disruptive merger plan is the only possible path forward
--that your opponents want HP to "remain static."

You rebuke Walter Hewlett (and former top HP executives)
for preferring organic growth focused on genuine product innovation
enhanced by manageable acquisitions such as Indigo.

In recent months hundreds of HP employees have written
eloquent, passionate letters to me opposing this merger.
Some say it will "dissolve the personality and soul of HP."

I received 200 letters against the merger before I got a single letter
in
favor.

The HP board must insist on a truly independent survey.
Not because business strategy should be generated by employee polls,
but because a major measure of successful management
is the trust and loyalty of employees.

HP thrived for 60 years without a single colossal merger
remotely approaching the scale of Compaq.

Was HP "losing ground" all those years?

You recall another one of my father's favorite sayings:
"More companies die of indigestion than starvation."

There is now a real danger that HP will die of a broken heart.

Thanks to you and all the others who responded. With this help,
I'm getting back into the swing of how it works.

Thanks again,
Richard
