You must mean Charles Proteus Steinmetz.  The guy was a certified 
genius.  IIRC, in college he was nicknamed "Beta" because while 
he was not first in any of his classes, he was second in *all* of 
them.

But, I could have sworn that Steinmetz was an AC guy!  I know he 
worked with hysteresis loss in motors, and I thought they were AC
motors at that.  Could be wrong though!  The AC/DC thing was an 
ongoing feud between Westinghouse and Edision (I think).  Perhaps 
Wirt will jump in here and straighten this mess out! :-)
