If you don't like /bin/vi, you can use /bin/frombyte and /bin/tobyte
to convert the file to MPE record format suitable for EDITOR.PUB.SYS:

 : /bin/frombyte "lib/smb.conf SMBCONF"
 : editor
 > text smbconf
  . . .
 > keep
 > exit
 : /bin/tobyte "-at SMBCONF lib/smb.conf"

When Samba is running, you can do further modification from the PC
side using an Editor like PFE, Proton, UltraEdit, TextPad, or alike
(as long as the know how to save with LF delimiters, not CR+LF).

Oh, and as of Samba 2.x you also have the SWAT web interface...
