I don't recognize what kind of device a C6394 drive is, but the basic answer
to your question is that SCSI is SCSI (more or less) and virtually any
single-ended SCSI drive should work on the HP3000.

We've had a number of the little 4GB internally mounted drives in our HP3000s
fail, as they are notorious for doing. As they fail, I simply buy external
SCSI drives, primarily from APS (http://www.apstech.com), with little regard
for the manufacturer any longer. Once plugged in and configured into the
system, they seem to work flawlessly.

My first attempt at doing this was several years ago, using an externally
mounted Quantum Fireball SCSI disc that I took off of a Macintosh that I was
no longer using. I plugged it into the HP3000's SCSI port just to see if our
5.5 918 would recognize it. Voila, it did.

Below is a part of the SYSINFO output that MPE/iX 5.5 generated. In versions
6.0 and higher, the general host IO map has been suppressed in SYSINFO, which
is a real shame. Nonetheless, in this 5.5 image, you can see that Mac drive
in LDEV 2's slot as MPE came to recognize it:

I don't have access to any easy metric telling me what my 6.0 and 6.5
machines are calling the external SCSI disc drives, but they also seem to
work equally well. In fact, there's a picture up on the web of our 6.0 918
with a 18GB LaCie drive on it that I purchased for just $200 when the HP 4GB
drive failed. The image is at:

Look at the middle image, just above the section labeled "Hardware
Maintenance".
