Raymond--

I have three HP3000's setup with remote console ports connected to a
standard RS-232 mux on an HP9000 (so we can use 'cu' on the 9000 to connect
to any of the 3000 remote consoles). The cables required for this are
neither straight-through nor null-modem, but rather a special recipe that
seems to be hard to find in pre-made cables. HP has sold them in the past as
part numbers 30062-60020, 92219Q, and 40233A, but as I far as I know none of
these are orderable new anymore. You might try searching the web for used
dealers that carry one of them.

Or you can make your own. The pinout of this cable is:

                                CPU                 Modem
                                --------------------------
                                Gnd 1  ---------- 1  Gnd *
                                TD  2  <--------- 3  RD *
                                RD  3  ---------> 2  TD *
                                RTS 4  <--------- 8  DCD *
                                DSR 6  ---------> 20 DTR *
                                GND 7  <--------> 7  GND *
                                DCD 8  ---------> 4  RTS
                                    9  <--------- 22 RI
                                DTR 20 <--------- 6  DSR
                                RI  22 <--------- 5  CTS

Note that the wiring is not symetric, therefore for certain applications the
end-to-end directional orientation of the cable is significant.

Also check port speeds and other settings. HP3000 consoles are usually
9600bps.
