You'll no doubt get many answers for this, but as a consultant/contractor/digital-wh_re for the last 8.5 years (not willingly, though), I can tell you that my rate is based largely on the geographic area more than the task(s) to be done. In other words, $40.00 per hour in East Nowhere, Kansas is a better rate than $60.00 in the Bronx, New York.

There is the issue of the rate charged for a contractor by the contracting company vs. the rate actually paid to the contractor. I'd venture to say that the rates actually paid to the contractor these days (when the contractor works for the contracting company) is in the upper 40's per hour, but again, this is very much a WAG number because of the geographic cost issues involved. There are also questions of benefits...a contractor with a full and generous compliment of benny's may do well at $35.00 per hour, but a poor/unloved/exploited/you-get-no-bennys peasant such as I, require a higher fee. :-)

Finally, for a strong (meaning it really exists, and is fully budgeted), long term contract (1+ years), I'm much more willing to negotiate a fee rate than I am for, let's say, a 90 day stint.

HTH,

Ray S.
