And to all others who gave me advice- which in this case is unanimous- replace the drives. However, my funding and time to reconfigure the 3000 is very finite as I'm in the process of transitioning to DBA for Oracle et al and just performing caretaker on the HP.

What I think I'll do is monitor the situation and have both of the DDS drives replaced by our CE after I put forth the statistics.

Will keep you all posted.

I agree with Michael Berkowitz' response. The DLT drives are far more reliable and they work on a variety of platforms....UNIX, NT, HP3000. They are worth the cost. You can pick them up at a reseller, too. The one we use is David Richardson at Genisys Corp there in Redmond, Washington, just up the road from you. You can reach David at 1-425-636-0779. Tell him I gave you his name. He'll treat you right anyway, but he'll be glad to know I referred you.
