I disagree that there is little or no reference to one Pontius Pilate.
Josephus (albeit) Jewish was in the employ of Rome as a historian.

Then there was Cicero although well after the fact, a critic of
Christians and Eusebius (a Christian) also well after the fact.  There
were other early church fathers and writings.  Although apparently in
this context even though the early Christians lived during the Roman
period their writings would probably be discounted as being biased.
