I (and a few others) use FreeBSD (www.freebsd.org) for this same purpose.
I've put up a number of sites using the FreeBSD solution on 486s to do the
firewalling/NAT. It is absolutely amazing to me how fast a 486 with 16 MB
of memory can be when it isn't running Windows! Since many of us have old
486s lying around, it is a viable solution if you don't want to invest
$200 in new hardware.
