A "carefully contrived marketing manoeuvre", I don't think so.
The damage has been done. There is nothing HP can say or do that
will bring back trust and confidence to where it was before the
announcement.

Say, doesn't Coca-Cola come to mind here? Just look how Coke "Classic" has
thrived since the announcement it would be discontinued. Hmm, maybe it is
just all a carefully contrived marketing manoeuvre...
