The same thing happened to us. We have a HP3000/917lx for development
purposes, with the integrated C1502B full-height 1.3 Gb DDS drive. The thing
failed once (stuck tape), and was replaced by HP. But : the same thing
happened one week later, so it was replaced again (and again). When we were
getting our 5th C1502B, I started making some noise with HP, so they replaced
it with a C1503B (2.0 Gb, half height unit). This has worked fine for the past
couple of weeks, but guess what : It is now in error with a 'problem, call for
help' message (two amber lights flashing). HP is coming on-site today. I am
curious how this will end....

We use HP-tape only, purchased directly from HP, and clean the drive every 2-3
days. BTW, the same type of unit is in our 957rx, but has not given us one
problem ever.
