words its treating the modem as a regular terminal even though you hang

Efren:

If I am not mistaken, it sounds like your modem is attached to a TERMINAL
port.  What you should do is reconfigurethe port on the '3000 as a MODEM
port.  Then the HP3000. will handle to port correctly.  There maybe other
issues concerning DTR and such but I am no expert with Datacom.
