Hewlett-Packard continues to pump life into its 25-year-old
HP 3000 platform, unveiling today three new server models
and an upgrade to its proprietary MPE/iX operating system.
The models include the HP 3000 997 series, which offers six-
way or eight-way models for a performance increase of up to
63% over the 995 and 996 series models; the 989KS midrange
server, which has one, two, four, or six processors; and an
entry-level 929KS/020. The new 997/800 model will sell for
$439,654 in a typical configuration, while the 989 KS/600
will sell for $348,962 for an equivalent configuration. The
929 KS/020 will sell for $67,444.
The updates come after the company said last month that HP
3000 would support the forthcoming IA-64 Intel architecture,
effectively lengthening the aging platform's life span. That
means customers who adopt HP 3000 and MPE for their
transaction processing capabilities will not have to endure
a costly migration to other platforms.
Version 6.0 of MPE/iX, which succeeds MPE/iX 5.5, boasts
data-manipulation features and interoperates with HP-UX, Mac
OS, NetWare, and Windows 95 and NT operating systems. It
will bundle Java support and Samba/iX NT tools for improved
software development, Internet support, and cross-platform
connections. -- Jeff Sweat
