It's my impression that only three domains are still very pristine. They are
".edu", ".gov" and ".mil" The reason is that the domain registrars that are
on the web aren't allowed to dispense these names. ".Edu" status is reserved
primarily for four-year institutions, but you occasionally see other
organizations with that designation, such as the Smithsonian. But the bottom
line is yes, you can generally accurately trust the ".edu" to be a US
university or something very similar. The ".gov" and ".mil" domains seem to
be absolutely clean and probably always will be.

".Org", on the other hand, has completely lost its value. All you need to do
to register an ".org" designation is have your five bucks in hand.
