The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) still
operates about 70 HP-3000 servers. There is a possibility that there
could be a few job openings in the future for which HP-3000 expertise
would be a plus.
If you are interested, the first step is to apply for the appropriate
civil service exam. After you pass the exam, your name is placed on an
"eligible list", after which you may apply for openings in that job
classification.
CDCR recently announced an exam for the classification "Systems Software
Specialist I (Technical)". This and similar exams are not offered
frequently, as eligible lists typically have a lifetime of one to four
years. If you are interested in applying for this exam, do not delay.
It takes a while to figure out the application process and fill out the
required application form (available online). Applications for this
exam must be postmarked by August 16.
You do not have to travel to Sacramento to turn in your application for
the exam, or to take the exam.
If you are interested, go to the State Personnel Board site,
www.spb.ca.gov. Click on "Seeking Employment with the State of
California" --> "Exam Bulletins" --> "Exams by Department" -->
"DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION" --> "SYSTEMS SOFTWARE
SPECIALIST I (TECHNICAL)".
Feel free to contact me by phone or e-mail if you have questions after
reading the exam bulletin.
