Subject: Re: [HP3000-L] HP7980SX Problem

Dan,

If I am reading this correctly, we had the same issue many times with our
beloved 7980XC's. From what you've stated, it appears that the tape drive
functions, only the front door does not open. This is normally caused by a
screw located below the door and slightly off to the left of center if
memory serves correctly. When it's extended to far down, it prevents the
door from dropping. You may be able to see it after the cosmetic bezel is
removed. However, with respect to your most recent post on this, the answer
is yes you can still use the tape drive. Remember, a 7980xx has a clear
panel that enshrouds the entire top portion of the drive that can be seen
when the drive is fully extended out of the cabinet by pulling the handle
just below the front door that won't open. The plastic shroud on top can
also be opened and from there you can mount your tape, close the lid and
hit the load/unload button.

HTH
Regards,

Reid E. Baxter

Hi -L Gang,

As part of a hardware upgrade on one system, I had to move an HP7980SX
reel-
to-reel tape drive to another box that had the room for it. All systems
are MPE/iX 7.0 PP2 and the system in question is a 979/100. I had noticed
prior to moving the drive that when pressing the 'Unload' button nothing
happened, but did not persue it until this morning whne I got it
reconfigured into its new location and was still unable to get the tape
door to open via the 'Unload' button. I have tried power cycling it,
pressing the 'reset' button, but have no idea what else I might try.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Dan
