Cognos Reports Record Second Quarter Results Earnings Per Share
Rise 33 Percent on 22 Percent Revenue Growth

OTTAWA, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Cognos Incorporated (Nasdaq: COGNF - news;
Toronto: CSN - news) today announced results for its second fiscal quarter
ended August 31, 1998. Revenue for the quarter was $70.6 million, a 22
percent increase over the same period last year (24 percent in local
currency). Pretax income for the quarter was $17.2 million, compared to
$14.3 million in the second quarter of last fiscal year. Net income was
$14.1 million and 32 cents per share, compared to $11.0 million and 24
cents per share, respectively, for the same period last year.
