Hey Nigel, you're treading onto unstable territory, here.... And I did not say uncharted, on purpose. The subject of "model-reassignment-surgery" has been battered to death a while ago. You won't get a problem with the hardware itself, which is pretty similar, though some I/O definitions (e.g. HSC) on the UX K-Class never existed on the 3000 equivalent (9x9), but the rest of the range is mostly hassle-free.
However, you'll get into a showstopper when you try to reconfigure a 9000 CPU board into a 3000 CPU board. You need an HP proprietary tool to tell the 9000 board its is now a 3000, hence able to boot MPE. HP never released that tool, to the best of my knowledge. I have never circumvented that obstacle myself. If you ever do, I guess a lot of people on that list would be highly interested.
Best regards,
Christian
