I don't know a lot about RIO files (and have never seen them used) but if
my impression is reasonably accurate the closest equivalent on Unix might
be Berkeley DB (aka BerkDB) which comes bundled on BSD/OS and Linux (and
presumably many other Unixen) and is available (with source and lots of
documentation) from Sleepycat Software ( http://www.sleepycat.com
). BerkDB is somewhere between KSAM and Image in the kinds of interface it
provides via its API for C (and other compiled languages) and interpretive
languages like Perl and TCL. [At my prior employment, we implemented an
electronic check processing system with TCL and BerkDB on BSD/OS. My
suggestion in early design meetings that we consider Image on MPE didn't
take long to get shot down. Eventually I decided that TCL and BerkDB were
a reasonable solution and came to appreciate their combined flexibility.]
