The support necessary for a PCL printer to use these facilities is
only available for the 5000 (or technically, I suppose, any SCSI
printer; that's just a guess). However, there is no techncial reason
that the same support couldn't be provided to any other printer. The
decision to provide this facility only to the 5000 was driven by
nontechnical considerations at the time it was made. Some of these
considerations
no longer apply, so it might be something for the System Improvement
Committee to start pushing on.
