<whine mode>
well, i guess this was bound to happen. i need
to set up a tape drive for use by tar.
</whine mode>

so of course, i've got some questions:
1) i do want to use 'mknod', right?
2) the documentation does an ever-so-lovely
job of explaining mknod's parameters - any
one else want to help? :-)
3) it looks like mknod is designed to make a
'hard' connection between a device file and a
device number, right? that is, i can't do something
like, mknod '/dev/tape c 0 7' *then* some kind
of file equation to point /dev/tape to another
ldev (in an elegant mpe sort of way...). so what
i really ought to do is: mknod '/dev/tape8 c 0 8'
etc...?
            - d (don't talk to me about unix....)
