All a System Manager worth his salt needs is a dumb terminal and a 1200 baud
modem!

Subject: Ideal System Manager Workstation
Date: Friday, September 13, 1996 11:32AM

First, I would like to thank you all who responded to my "TCP/IP Printing
Question" post. We are getting a NBSpool demo package from Quest tomorrow.

I was wondering what would be an ideal workstaion for a HP3000 system
manager to manage the following environment:

 - Two HP3000 systems, 969 and 918 with 384meg and 128meg respectively.
 - 32 gigs mirrored to another 32 gigs setup as private volume.
 - MPE/IX 5.0 with GalncePlus software.
 - Both systems have FDDI cards installed for high speed network.
 - Network environment is fiber IP network which is heavily subnetted.
 - Its a very large DEC/OpenVMS shop with several different flavors of
unix boxes (HPUX, DigitalUnix, DataGeneral(yuk) and SPARC). Also, a
ton of NT servers running on DEC Alpha architecture.

Is there any system management software that runs on Xwindow workstation
(which is preferred choice given the environment)? I have heard there is
HP OpenView Console (OVC) that runs on PC windows. Can anyone share their
experience with OVC. It would be greatly appreciated.

We are looking for software that will filter console messages and page
an alphanumeric pager with specific message such as, "LDEV1 is 80% full"
and other critical system messages.

Thanks,

Rashid Khan
