on one of our e3000's sometime Sunday mornings the network stops working.
emails do not go out ( they get queued) ftp transfers fail to connect to
remove server and ftp inbound fails. to correct this problem we stop and
start the network
stop commands
nscontrol stop
continue
netcontrol stop;net=loop
continue
netcontrol stop;net=lan1

start commands
netcontrol start;net=lan1
CONTINUE
netcontrol start;net=loop
CONTINUE
nscontrol start

this past Sunday it occurred sometime between 4:24 and 9:30 am. that is
to say that email sent at 4:24 was sent just fine and email sent at 9:30
was queued. there was no email sent between these times so it is
difficult to find specific times that the failure i am trying to locate a
more precise time so i turn to network logging. I'm not sure i have my
logging set right but it is not taking very much disk space so it does not
seem to set to badly. in looking at the log files i find this kind of a
record.

i am hoping that some of the statistics are since the network was started
and others like pkts sent are since the last short interval.
the current output of link control is:
:linkcontrol @;status=all

Heartbeat losses 0 Receives broadcast 160189
                                 Receives multicast 0

the end question is how do i know what is causing the problem?
what should i be logging to help locate the problem?
what should i be looking at when the network is in this hung state next
weekend, since someone has to drive to the machine and issue commands from
the console, to help locate the problem?
