One wonders if the "box" in question needs to steal power
from both the serial AND parallel ports in order to function,
or just one side only?

Even if it will function with just the power from the
Parallel side, you may still have to fool the box into
thinking the serial port has power. Many moons ago
this used to be accomplished by jumpering pins
4,6,8 and 20. Don't know if this kludge will still
solve the problem.

Subject: [HP3000-L] HP3000 and Okidata Microline 520 printer

A 3 wire serial DTC was connected into a Active (powered) serial-to-
parallel converter. Converter was then plugged into a Okidata Microline 520
printer for use with mailing lables. Converter failed last week. Replaced
converter with a passive (not powered by external supply) convertor
purchased from Black Box. DIP switch settings on new converter set to
match failed convertor. Will not print. Schematic from BlackBox shows unit
pulls power from several pins on the serial and parallel sides. DTC only
has 3 wires to pull power from. (TX, RX, Signal Ground) Is the problem due
to powering of the Signal Converter? In order to print from the HP to a
parallel dot matrix, does it require only using an Active (seperate power
supply) model signal converter?

Thanks in advance.
