Please excuse the confusing and erroneous messages about "You have been
added to the HP3000-M" list, it was a case of brain flatulence on my
part and I humbly beg your apologies :-)

I am trying to set up a moderated echo of the HP3000-L list to be
distributed in digest format (HP3000-M) and I got the subscriptions
backwards. I knew I messed up just after pressing the "send" key, but
unfortunately there's no "get back" key in my mail software.

Don't make a mad dash to sign up for HP3000-M. It is NOT a separate
list, it will NOT contain anything you don't see here, and it does NOT
even have any subscribers yet. The idea is to provide a slightly more
compact delivery format for the HP3000-L discussion, with our occasional
humorous and/or nostalgic and/or off-topic diversions excluded (as well
as my administrivial rantings like this). It is still an experiment
(you may recall I tried something similar about 6 weeks ago).

While I'm on administrivia, let me add a few notes about the netnews
gateway changes (the magic that mirrors comp.sys.hp.mpe <-> HP3000-L).
The gateway administrators at American University were getting swamped
by "junk mail" complaints about spams and other noise coming across from
usenet. It wasn't American's fault, they were only the gateway; but the
frustration became high enough for them to change the gateway to send
all mail "transparently" without inserting any intervening address
information for american.edu.

Subsequently, I can no longer "moderate" postings coming from usenet
like I was previously. The noise level could increase, but we will have
to wait and see what happens. The only other alternative is to change
the HP3000-L list so that any posting from an address not subscribed to
the list gets forwarded to me for approval. That is a considerable
number, especially in light of the fact that many of you have several
mail addresses/aliases/mailhosts you use and only ONE of those, if any,
would match your original subscription address. I hope it doesn't come
to that.

A final note, to reduce mail bounces returned from list deliveries, I
will be changing the list (in the near future) to require subscriptions
to be confirmed every 6 months. When this is initially turned on, you
may very well get a confirmation request. All you have to do is reply
to [log in to unmask] with the confirmation "cookie" (or with most
mailers, you can simply reply as the confirmation letter explains) and
you're set for another 6 months. Further, Listserv can also "probe" an
address which appears to have questionable connectivity. The "probe" is
less instrusive (you just ignore it!); the purpose of the probe is to
track bounces when they are returned. Hopefully this won't be much of a
bother for you; it will be a big help for me.

We now return you to your regularly-scheduled list discussion already in
progress...
