My HP-UX version returns 17 for "HP 9000". (A made up number,
but I mention it because it would be nice to be consistent across
multiple vendors)

I've used the scrambled order setting up of PNAME for years,
but I never thought to combine it with a useful (and misleading)
operation like line 854 above!
