Assuming A is the packed decimal thing and B is a regular integer variable.
Different languages have their pluses and minuses.  Perl is good at many
things but handling packed decimal data isn't one of them.  Different tools
for different jobs...

PS: The original post refered to UNsigned packed decimal data... That's NOT:
