On the twin subjects that this thread has evolved into, sex and viruses, just
yesterday President Daniel arap Moi of Kenya suggested that everyone in the
country abstain from sex for two years in order to eliminate the AIDS
epidemic.

While that suggestion actually would work if Kenya were an island unto
itself, and if everyone religiously followed that mandate, the unspoken
mechanism by which it works is that two years is a sufficient period of time
for everyone who is currently infected to die and fall out of the population,
if left untreated.

While I honestly can't think of an obvious way to tie this bit of information
to Bruce's and Deny's comments, it does at least illustrate that there are a
lot of ways to eliminate infectious agents from a network. It's just that
they're not all equally effective, ethical or even plausible.

In Moi's defense however, his previous attempts at mass importation and
distribution of condoms was met with fierce resistance from the country's
religious leaders.
