You must be trying to install this version on an MPE/iX 5.0 machine.
As of 5.5, tar is able to preserve file characteristics in hidden
files that older versions of tar can't handle. About the only way I
can think of for you to get the 5.0 version is from last year's
HPWorld contributed library tape or the FREEWARE tape put out by Lund
last year.
