Or we can do some of the cool projects ourselves, for no cost other than our
time.

I don't speak for CSY, but they have been willing to reveal internals and/or
MPE source code to technically-inclined members of the 3k community interested
in doing enhancements or add-on utilities.  In my case I asked for the source
for :SETCLOCK and :SHOWCLOCK in order to determine whether or not a port of
the xntp Network Time Protocol would be feasible (it is; I just need to find
some time after Apache and BIND).

Granted, some projects like major IMAGE enhancements aren't really suitable for
a do-it-yourself effort.  But, the potential does exist for new toys.
