Wirt Wrote: To me, George W. Bush represents the embodiment of one of
America's shining ideals: the notion that *anybody* can grow up and be
President.
Actually, Dubya was never supposed to be president. The Bushs had been
grooming Jeb (J.E.B. or John Ellis Bush), for that role. Dubya was a fluke.
Dubya failed at every thing he ever did until some oil baron took a liking
to the boy and the rest was history. American capital got its spokes-model
again; at least Ronnie Reagan read excellent copy.
The Bush/Walker clan, of course, is not just anybody. As then Texas governor
Ann Richards said about George I, "He was born with a silver foot in his
mouth." For the scion of an old money family, to play at being "just folks"
is just silly. Wielding power comes as naturally to this family as holding a
shrimp fork and sipping champagne from a flute on the deck of swaying yacht.
In the past, much ado has been made over presidential family members'
indiscretions. Jimmy Carter had Billy, Clinton had Roger and going back to
the 50s, Dick Nixon had his brother Donald. Every time a Kennedy family
member breaks wind in public it is the lead story on the six o'clock news
with film at eleven.

In the case of the Bushs, there is no constant bombardment of the family's
legal and social faux pas. Neil Bush, was a principle player in numerous
scams of the 80s, ones that cost the taxpayers a lot more than Billy carter
getting drunk and shooting his mouth off. There are those that would place
Jeb and Dubya close to the S&L scandal as well. (As for the other brothers,
Tito, Marlon and Germaine appear to be innocent of any crimes or
misdemeanors.) I grant you that Winona Ryder is more famous (and possibly
more important) than the president's niece, the daughter of a possible
future presidential candidate, but why was her trial national news and the
Bush baby's barely mentioned. Can you imagine what a field day the press
would have had if Chelsea Clinton had been caught drinking under age? Where
the Kennedy's may have enough money to buy verdicts the Bush money is so old
it buys silence.

While we are on the Monty Python theme: I do not advocate violence in any
form, against any person, at any time, for any reason. That said, every time
I hear Dubya speak I keep waiting for that armored knight to smack him with
a rubber chicken. I also half expect him to be wearing a knotted
handkerchief, shouting and be hitting himself in the head with bricks.

Wirt also pined: But beyond that, I have never felt so out of touch with the
American public. Hang in there, Wirt. You are in touch with more of us than
you know. I think our numbers are growing daily.
