Over the years I've seen the following names either used or
suggested on the many systems I've either managed or worked on:
Series CX: Nose-Drive (Either crashing or running out of gas!)
(S/N:153 if I recall)
2 Series II: Ebe & Gebe (The computers at that time gave folks
the 'ebe-gebes'! (SIA))
{SIA - Spelling is Approximate}
Series 33: Chug-Chug (The engine that thought it could...
but really couldn't!)
2 Series III, 1 44: Tom, Dick and Harry
Other suggestions included:
Larry, Moe & Curley (some of us in IM felt
like 'stooges')
Series 48 & 68: Chip & Dale
2 Series 70s: Apollo & Zeus
987/200: OZ (Compared to S/70, performance was like a dream!)
The analyst's always had other, 'creative' names, but unfortunately they
could never be publicly associated with the hardware. Also, at one time
when we replaced a Series 48, we held a 'wake', rolling the system into
the auditorium, decorating it like a coffin, had appropriate testimonials
from folks, including the plant manager, and our HP sales/support teams,
wore black armbands, and even had a R.I.P cake! Was a lot of fun,
celebrating the successful completion of a major upgrade/migration. Now
days alot of these types of celebrations would be 'gathering around the
static bag'!
