capital LS works??? without ./ in front??

hpbin.sys is not in your path

makes sense because your fully-qualifying 'ls'

yes, you want 'hpbin.sys' as part of your path. there's no pressing
need (that i'm aware of) to state it as '/SYS/HPBIN'. it sounds too
like perhaps someone has added '.' to your path. that's a bad thing
and should be removed. regard /bin, that directory should be populated
with links pointing back to the files in .hpbin.sys.

the response center? :-)

because posix is fully-integrated into mpe (vs bolted on), it's
critical for hppath to be set at logon time. that's probably best done
thru a system-level logon udc. you do want to invoke the shell as
others have recommended with the '-L' option. do NOT change
/etc/profile. you don't 'own' that file. in the (unlikely?) event
that the operating system is updated, that file will be overwritten.
instead there should be provisions in /etc/profile to invoke
/etc/profile.local. that's the file you will want to customize as
necessary. you can have .exrc and .profile (for example) in your logon
group which will provide even more customization if you need. - d
