 I am not as sophisticated as you, I have an old pillow case and a dead chicken which we swing around three times...
Just kidding,  I too have cleaned a tape drive multiple times, generally while saying some incantation under my breath.
And I also, but really just to test, would put [log in to unmask] as a test.   :-)

likewise, 3 does seem the magic number, and it has also saved me many 
times, likewise doing a small store afterwards to the real tape you are 
going to use next.
