Thanks very much.

This made the NT connected extremely fast, but still we can't use 98, 2000
or XP to access the drive.

In the log, when using XP, we see:

"Error writing 4 bytes to client. -1. Exiting."

Richard

The problem to me seems to be your netbios name resolution try to put this
in your samba config.
--------
name resolve order = wins host bcast
wins server = <ip addie of your wins server>
os level = 1
local master = no
domain master = no
preffered master = no
make sure that wins supported = no ;or that it is commented out
-----------------
I'm assuming your not the wins server on the network, for basic browsing
that is the most important options. I found that they work the best together
like that.

There is also a document in your Samba docs called DIAGNOSES.TXT read it and
use it its not long but its great for fault finding. There is other lovely
docs hidden in there as well.

One important thing, I would recommend you go up to samba 2.0.7 not 2.0.10
the smbclient utility changed in the precompiled binaries. I love the idea
that you can successfully use smbclient in this under MPE like you use the
one in Linux. There is security issues that's why they brought 2.0.10 out,
but like I said before the smbclient is broken (IMHO). Look at
www.sambaix.org ( MPE custom docs) and www.samba.org ( More general but
useful information). There is some installation issues but read the
documents its straightforward.

I hope this helps

Subject: [HP3000-L] Another Samba question

Hi

I've tried the Samba list, but I'm impatient to get this resolved, and this
list seems to know everything.

We have a common problem here where NT machines can see the Samba HP drive,
but Win98 and Win2000 can't. Our network guy keeps blaming Samba and I keep
blaming the Network.

Does anyone know why, when we do a detailed analysis, we see the network
accesses the HP within 1 second, but doesn't appear to do anything else
until 30 seconds later, coming up with PC NETWORK PROGRAM 1.0. The network
guys thinks that this is too long that's why Win98 and 2000 can't get
access.

He also had a theory that Samba was becoming the PDC, which caused the
network to go slow. Is it even possible for Version 1.19.

Desperately need help.
