I'm sure the folks at DEC said the same thing about the VAX. ;-)
Oh, I understood that it was for Oracle internally. I guess my point is how
many companies smaller or equal to the size of Oracle are going to ask
themselves, "Well, if Oracle can run on Linux machines, why should we pay
extra for a 'proprietary' Unix?" If more and more customers find they can
save money on an OS license, how many are going to continue paying for
support? How long before the application vendors find out they can get more
sales by keeping their prices down and selling just the app and not the OS?
Has the 'cheaper' NT cut into the Unix market? The only thing that can stop
this once it gets going is some really bad horror stories from the early
adopters. If Oracle finds they can't run their business, then there is
nothing to worry about. But if it works for a company the size of Oracle
and nobody wants to pay for an HP-UX version of Oracle, like they didn't
want to pay for the MPE/iX version, do you think they will keep an HP-UX
version?
Maybe some will argue that folks will pay more for reliability. I would ask
the folks at CSY how that worked out for them.
