I believe that the 7th column is mainly supposed to be blank. Compiler
implementers use it for their own use. An '*' is a comment. The '$' you
refer to is a compiler option. There may be other characters which take on a
different meaning if placed in the 7th column but right now I am confused
with Fortran and continuation lines. I could look it up in a manual but then
so could you. If the above characters are not in the 7th column then '*'
means multiply and the '$' is predominately used for formating money values
in picture clauses.
